Type 2 Diabetes - Cinnamon for Treating Diabetes

By
Nutrition as medicine just got more support, this time from a new study on cinnamon in diabetes, published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine in September 2012.
Researchers in the Department of Nutrition at Tehran University in Iran assigned 22 people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes to receive 3 grams of a cinnamon supplement per day for 8 weeks and compared them with 22 Type 2 diabetes patients taking a placebo.

Cinnamon actually stimulates the production of glucose-burning enzymes and increases the effectiveness of insulin, according to the USDA Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Maryland, in the United States.

The diabetics treated with cinnamon showed lowered levels of:
  • blood sugar,
  • blood fats,
  • weight, and
  • fat mass
at the end of 8 weeks, while the diabetics taking a placebo showed no change.
From this information, it was concluded cinnamon could be somewhat helpful in treating Type 2 diabetes.

Most earlier studies on cinnamon and diabetes have shown similar results. In April 2012, the journal Recent Patents in Food, Nutrition, and Agriculture reported the results of a literature review performed at the University of Rhode Island in the United States. The review found most studies on cinnamon associated it with lowered blood sugar levels.

One teaspoon of cinnamon weights 2.756 grams, slightly less than the amount given to the treated participants in the study. Sprinkling a heaped teaspoon of cinnamon onto your oatmeal in the morning would give you about the same amount of cinnamon. Or try making Moroccan Vegetable Stew according to the website ChefMD. The recipe includes vegetable broth, sweet potatoes, bell pepper, raisins, chili pepper, cumin, paprika, turmeric, cinnamon, brown rice, almonds, and cilantro.

Greenkitchenstories.com offers a recipe for Cinnamon Roasted Vegetables, which calls for cauliflower, carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes, garlic, ground cinnamon, cinnamon sticks, and olive oil.

The website: The Humanesociety.org suggests making Cinnamon-Spiced Roasted Vegetable with Couscous, with shallots, red bell pepper, sweet potato, butternut squash, coriander, ground cumin, ground, cinnamon, and oil. Sparkpeople.com recommends making Cinnamon Iced Tea with teabags, cinnamon sticks, water, and ice.

Not fond of the flavor of cinnamon? Cinnamon capsules are also available. See your local health food store or check online.

In the future it could be possible to buy soy flour with nutrients from cinnamon. Researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey, United States, developed soy flour with extracts of cinnamon.

When the flour was fed to obese mice with high blood sugar, their blood sugar levels went down. The study was published in December 2012 in the journal Food Chemistry.

Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can take control of the disease and take back your health. If you take any medication, talk to your doctor before taking cinnamon.
