What is the best exercise to reduce belly fat or get a smaller bum? It's a popular question. Ask anyone who wants to lose a few pounds where exactly they want to lose it from, and you will usually get one of two answers: their belly or their bum. For many people, what they would like to change the most about their bodies is to either have a flatter stomach, or a smaller behind. This is not surprising.
It is also not surprising, that almost every night on television there is some sort of commercial
promoting the latest workout machine or exercise that guarantees to get rid of any fat in those areas in "30 days or your money back". After all, when a consumer wants something in their lives there are always plenty of others who want to make a profit off them.

Furthermore, if you type "exercise to reduce belly fat" into a search engine, you get roughly 1.3 million results. So, this is obviously a very popular topic of interest. The top result shown is a site that has a list of 10 kinds of sit up and crunch. It is the same scenario on every site on that first page of search results, which to be honest, astounds me.

It may shock some of you to learn this, but crunches or sit ups are not amongst the best exercises to burn belly fat. In fact, they will not target belly fat at all. Similarly, doing lots of lunges or squats will not target the fat around your butt and burn it off, our bodies just do not work that way. Also, remember those ab-machines that we used to see advertised on television all the time? Well they were useless - I know this from personal experience, as I was fooled into buying one a few years ago.

The fact is targeted fat loss, or "spot reduction" as it is also called, is impossible. You cannot target an area of fat on your body and exercise that area to get results. In fact, the ONLY way to get rid of fat in a specific area is a drastic one - Liposuction! Seeing as liposuction is a bit of a drastic measure, we won't endorse it or suggest you all go out and get the fat sucked from your bodies! (ugh!).

The reason for this is, when you exercise a certain area of your body you are not exercising or burning the fat in that area, you are targeting the muscles. Exercising your muscles is not the best way to burn fat. The best exercise to reduce belly fat or to get a small bum, is to engage in an exercise that is cardiovascular. It doesn't matter what sort of exercise it is really. Running, cycling, swimming, dancing or anything else that gets your heart beating in the aerobic area is best. Basically, this means moving around and sweating a lot, but not so much that you exhaust your muscles - just enough to get you tired out.

So although you can't do an exercise to reduce belly fat and specifically target it, at least now you know what sort of exercise reduces your bodies' overall fat content, and can adjust your exercise routines accordingly.

So the message is, don't try doing a thousand sit ups or lunges in an attempt to get a smaller bum or tum, get sweating instead! Once you employ a regular cardio routine with a healthy eating plan like this one, you won't just be burning the fat off your bum or belly, you'll be burning it off everywhere!
