Kitchen Stories: Tips to Help Your Kids Eat Healthier

By
Proper nutrition is important not just for adults, but also for growing kids. The food during their development years will have a great effect on how they will grow up. Eating the right food will help with their energy, skills, and behaviour.
Teach kids to eat healthier while they're still young and make a big impact in their lifelong food choices. Most picky eaters grew up eating a single type of food repeatedly. This became a problem
later on as they limited themselves to a certain food group. Follow the tips below and make your child a food lover while still maintaining proper health and weight.

Control the Food Supply

Be a bit strict and decide the food you will buy the next time you go to the grocery store. Kids will usually pester you to get their favourite snacks or the treats they see on the television. Think about their health when getting these products, though. As a parent, you are in charge of buying the foods.

Buy healthier and more nutritious foods. Avoid processed food products as much as you can and go for the healthy, organic, and all-natural kinds. Kids will get used to eating the food you give them. This will happen especially when they are hungry and there are no other stocks in the pantry or the fridge. You can still buy their favourite snack even if it is not that nutritious, but only do this occasionally.

Go for Home Cooking

Healthy eating for kids does not mean total control for the adult. The kids still need to have some say in the food they eat. Let them choose what they want to eat during mealtimes and snack times. You may even make them choose how much they want of it. If you only get the healthy foods, then there won't be a problem in giving the kid the choice of food they want.

If they still bug you about certain meals they want, cooking the food yourself is a better option.

Home-cooked meals are healthier not just for the kids, but also for the whole family. Processed foods, restaurant meals, and take-out foods usually have a lot of fat, sugar, and salt in them as these are for commercial dining purposes. Cooking your own food lets you control everything from the seasonings to the quality of ingredients you use. You can still dine out but save this for special occasions.

Get the kids involved with the cooking so that you can teach them about food preparation and proper nutrition. They will also love eating the food, whether it's carrots and broccolis, as they helped in the preparation.

Portion Control

There's nothing wrong with letting your kid eat their favourite food, just be sure to control it. Let the kids stop eating when they feel they've had enough. Don't force them to finish their plate if they're already full. Also, never use their favourite food as a reward or bribe to have them do something.
