How To Diet And Still Eat All The Foods You Love

By

How to Lose Weight and Still Eat the Foods You Love

Before embarking on any sort of weight loss or fitness journey, it's always a good idea to consult your physician. While this article will provide you with some great weight loss tips, only a doctor will know for sure if the advice is right your lifestyle.

It's a common misconception that losing weight means limiting the types of foods you eat. We've all seen it before; a friend starts a new diet and suddenly all they eat are salads and chicken breast. There's nothing wrong with eating those types of food when you want to shed some pounds, but it's completely incorrect to believe that you must eat those foods for weight loss.

There's really only one rule that you need to follow when you are trying to lose weight. The magic rule is:

Calories In, Calories Out

That's it folks. As long as you make sure that you are consuming less calories than you are expending, then you will lose weight. You could practically fill your calories with brownies and as long as you are expending more calories than your foods, you'll find that the number on that magic scale of yours will decrease over time. Now, do I recommend that you only eat brownies to fill your caloric needs?

Absolutely not. The point I'm trying to make is that the notion that you have to eat certain foods for weight loss is nonsensical.

So, how do you know how many calories you must consume?

Simply put, all you need to do is find a calorie calculator. There are hundreds, even thousands of calorie calculators all over the web. A simple Google search will help you find them at ease. The one thing you want to note is you want to find a calorie calculator that gives you the amount of calories needed to lose weight.

Some calculators may only give you the amount of calories you need to maintain your weight, so make sure you are careful with your search distinction. Some calculators will even give you the amount of carbohydrates, fats and protein you need to consume per day. Those calculators are even better because with those macronutrient amounts, you can easily pinpoint exactly how many calories of each you need to lose weight.

Do I have to follow macronutrient amounts?

When it comes to down to it, you really don't. As long as you figure out the amount of calories you need from the calculators, you really could just track the calories you are eating and make sure you do not go above that number.

However, I will say that following specific macronutrient amounts will support better body composition. Eating a diet that is proportionate to the amount of fats, carbs and protein will result in more muscle mass and less fat.

How do I make sure not to eat too few calories?

This is a GREAT question. The beauty of the calorie calculators, especially from trusted websites, is they'll make sure to give you calories that safely lose weight.

Most of them will put you in somewhere around a 250-500 caloric deficit. This is the perfect range to lose weight. At 250 calories below maintenance you will lose anywhere between .5-1 pound a week. A deficit of 500 calories will see you lose anywhere from 1-2 pounds.

What if I want to lose more than 2 pounds a week?

You don't. Besides the first week of dieting where people may lose upwards of 5-6 pounds because of the loss of water weight, you don't want to lose more than 2 pounds a week. The reason being is weight loss of more than 2 pounds would put you at dangerously low caloric levels. These levels may help you lose more weight in the short term, but your body will adapt over time. You'll eventually get to a point where you stop losing weight with your already low caloric values, and then what would you do? You can't go any lower with your calories or else you'd starve.

By sticking to 2 pounds a week, you ensure slow and steady weight loss with a minimal chance of negative health effects.

What happens if I hit a plateau and can't lose any more weight?

With any sort of caloric restriction, your body will eventually adjust and you may see your weight loss come to a halt. Never fear though, there are some things you can do to get over your plateau.

For starters, adding cardio to your weekly workouts can help you get over the plateau. Shooting for cardio about 2-3 times a week can safely add to your caloric deficit and get you back to losing weight.

Another thing you can do is plan a day of "no counting calories" every 2 weeks.

On this day, you can simply eat as you choose without worrying about tracking every single piece of food. Just be careful not to go too overboard. The point of a no counting day is to add calories to your diet so your body can reset and begin losing pounds again. Be careful though! You don't want to eat so much that you set your weight loss goals too far back.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So that's it folks. No longer do you need to follow the salad and chicken diet. Feel free to eat all the foods you want, as long as you stay below your caloric intake needs.

How to Make Sticking With Your Diet Easier

By

If you're are constantly finding yourself falling off the healthy eating wagon, it's important that you start considering what you can do to help yourself stick with it better so that you can move forward and see the results that you're after.

Adherence really is the number one thing that you must be accounting for as you plan to get in shape and lose weight.

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to make sticking with your diet easier, and if you can just employ one of those, you can get yourself back on track to faster success. Let's go over the main techniques to try.

The Details:

· Get a diet buddy. Having a supportive friend there for you during your times of struggle can go a long way to helping you stay on course.

· Make a list of goals. Set some goals from the very start that you want to accomplish so you have a clear reason for being on the diet.

· Use daily goals. Along with your long-term goals, have some daily goals that you can pat yourself on the back for hitting. The feeling you get when you carry them out will propel you forward.

· Try new recipes. Dietary boredom is one of the biggest reasons that people fall off their new eating plan. Make sure to try a new recipe every so often; the choices are endless.

· Add new vegetables to your dishes. Vegetables are a must to eat daily, but most people don't. Add one new vegetable to your diet each week to help liven up your meals and boost your nutrition. Soon you're bound to find a new favorite!

· Plan to indulge. If you plan a cheat meal once a week, you won't obsess so much about guilty pleasure foods the rest of the time.

· Stay hydrated. Not drinking enough water can cause food cravings to set in.

· Stay away from your triggers. If you know you always give in to cinnamon buns after one whiff of the sugary scent, don't go anywhere near a bakery.

· Shop wisely. If you don't bring foods you crave into the house, you won't be able to eat them when the craving strikes.

· Take progress pictures. Doing so will help you see how far your efforts are getting you. When you see your motivation waning, pull out past photos to remind yourself how far you've come. Or keep an old pair of pants to slip on when you're feeling discouraged.

· Write in a journal. Getting your thoughts down on paper will release them and help you work through your emotions rather than turning to comfort food.

The Bottom Line:

So there you have some of the main ways of making sure that you stay the course on your diet plan. The odd set-back here and there is completely normal so don't expect complete perfection.

As long as you pick yourself back up and get back on track, you should have no problem moving onwards and see the results that you're hoping for. A set-back is only a set-back if it causes you to fall off the protocol for a week or longer, and you really do damage to your newly formed healthy eating habits.

What Foods Should You Never Eat on a Diet?

By
Conventional dieting wisdom used to dictate that there were certain foodstuffs you should never eat under any circumstances when you were trying to lose weight.

That list will be familiar to just about everybody above a certain age - chocolate, ice cream, bread, cheese, sweeties, and potatoes etc. In some respects, intuitively, some of those things make some sort of sense but the problem is that different diets had very different lists of banned foodstuffs.

For example, some fruit-based diets majored on the benefits of eating bananas whereas low-carbohydrate diets listed them as something that should never be consumed.

Then there were the low-fat diets that banned most forms of fats, to an extent that was subsequently discovered to be potentially harmful to health.

So, what's the reality?

In modern weight loss programs, there is much more emphasis on designing a diet to suit the individual and their particular body chemistry rather than the construction of extensive lists of totally banned foodstuffs. In practice, different people need different forms of diet to optimise their weight loss performance. Simply handing out a list of what can and cannot be eaten to everybody on the same basis is an approach that is unlikely to work.

There is, of course, some disagreement on the specifics of this philosophy but many dieting experts now believe in a varied but nevertheless managed diet that can potentially include almost anything providing everything that is consumed is taken into account in the global dietary design.

Of course, weight loss programs will still stress the benefits of healthy balanced eating and the elimination of or very significant reduction in, the consumption of certain products. Broadly speaking, it's likely to be the case that strong advice will be given to eliminate entirely or to eat only very occasionally and then sparingly, those foodstuffs containing what are sometimes called 'empty calories' with little direct nutritional benefit.

Such products are likely to include at least some of those old conventional favourites from the past such as:

• Sweets
• Full sugar fizzy drinks
• Cakes, pastries and biscuits
• Fried fast-snack type food
• Mass-produced take away meals
• Alcohol
• Puddings other than those based around the use of fresh fruit and yoghurt etc.

Undoubtedly that looks rather tediously like all those old lists mentioned above but it is significantly different in several respects.

In most modern diets, gone is the absolute blanket ban on things such as bread, potatoes, eggs, cheese and so on. That's because although certain products of that type can be something of a challenge for the body to efficiently process without putting on weight, they also bring with them health benefits in areas such as fibre and good cholesterol etc.

So, some modern diets may well include an allowance of certain traditionally banned foodstuffs but will stress the need for them to be consumed in moderation and as part of a tightly managed overall regime.

It's worth noting that this is talking purely about the 'diet' as in the losing weight aspects of the equation. Many diets today though focus not simply on losing weight but also on improving your overall health and vitality. As such, they may well suggest that certain foodstuffs are included or excluded based upon your overall state of health rather than necessarily exclusively upon the fastest path to weight loss.

Do remember that it's always advisable to base a diet upon professional and medical advice rather than simply constructing your own list of things that you have decided to either include or exclude from your daily food intake!

Is Any Sort of Candy Allowed On The Medifast Diet?

By Lindsey Price
I sometimes hear from people who are wondering if they are going to be able to eat a very specific comfort food on the Medifast diet. Sometimes, they are almost certain that their desired food isn't going to be acceptable. One such example is candy.

I might hear a comment like: "I know that the answer to this is probably no, but are you allowed to eat candy on Medifast? I have a huge weakness for candy. I don't eat tons - just a coupe of small pieces per day - and I don't want to give this up, although I realize that my love of candy is probably one thing that is contributing to my need to be on a diet in the first place."

You can have a very specific type of candy and still not be cheating. Medifast allows you to eat five of their prepackaged meals per day plus one meal that you make on your own. In addition to this, you are allowed to have one snack each day which consists of foods like celery, a sugar free popsicle, sugar free gelatin, pickles, or three pieces of sugar free gum or mints. (You can also have one of the Medifast crackers or chips. Examples are the cheese puffs, the apple crisps, and the vegetable crackers.

Now, by mints they are typically talking about the peppermint or spearmint flavored mint candies.

And I believe that they encourage gum and mints because they know that if you have a fresh taste in your mouth, then you are less likely to cheat. Because when your mouth feels clean and fresh, you're less likely to want to eat and interfere with that feeling. (That's why people who have cravings will often brush their teeth when one hits.)

I know that some people extend the definition of mints to include sugar free, hard candies. I'm not sure that this would be endorsed by the company (and for that reason I'd encourage you to call and ask them,) but this practice hasn't hurt their results any. I even know folks who will occasionally have those small snack sized sugar free chocolate candies. If you were going to go this route, you'd want to make sure that you're choosing a very low calorie option.

Frankly people will also sometimes cheat on this diet. I know someone who allows herself one tiny piece of chocolate per day. In terms of compliance, this isn't going to be ideal. But some people have this sort of willpower and make it work for them. And others will go all out and have a full sized candy bar or other treat on occasion. I don't think that this is the end of the world as long as you get back on the diet as soon as you can. That's generally want I try to do.

But to answer the question posed, you can have three sugar free mints per day and still be in full compliance. And you don't have to have this in lieu of one of your six meals. This is on top of those meals.

Diet and Weight Loss - The Next Best Thing

By
It seems like every day brings a new weight loss product, or "secret" way to lose weight revealed.

I don't know how old you are, but I am 68 years old and have been seeing this process for decades.

I have seen diets, pills, creams, and other weight loss products suddenly become popular and gradually die out.

Is it that none of these things really work, or do better weight loss options keep being discovered?

Well, maybe a little of both.

That's part of the problem, you see. Another part is, that if these things DO work, the claims made are often way more than what the product can actually deliver.

Let's look at three items recently mentioned by a well-known doctor on his show. These three items are garcinia cambogia, raspberry ketones, and green coffee bean extract.

At the moment, these are still pretty hot topics, although the claims have been around for a while, but the "next best thing", is right around the corner.

Garcinia cambogia is extracted from the rind of the tamarind. Claims are that the extract can help burn fat and prevent storage of fat.

Raspberries contain an enzyme, Ketone, which increases metabolism and energy, and helps burn fat. It takes a lot of raspberries to get any effect, but a way has been found to extract the enzyme and put it in a pill.

Green coffee bean extract comes from... wait for it... green coffee beans! It seems that roasting destroys most of the Chlorogenic Acid found in the beans. Studies show that this substance can help burn fat, AND have antioxidant qualities as well, which makes it a good general health product.

Now, the point here is, that like so many highly touted weight loss products of the past... and future, each of these by themselves can only do a small part of the weight loss process for those who take them. Even worse, while the studies which seem to support the claims made for these products, actually can be a little bit discouraging if you think about them.

For example, a study of one of these products indicated that the subjects lost an average of 17.5 pounds over roughly a three month period. This was accompanied by a reduction of overall body weight by 10.5 per cent.

This immediately sounds good, and I'm not knocking it. I could recommend a product with results like these, assuming that there are no other health issues.

However, let's look just a little bit more deeply at this information.

The overall, and average, weight loss mentioned are slightly less than one pound a week. Nothing wrong with that... especially if you consider that the subjects supposedly made no other changes in their lives. That's just a little bit less than what weight loss experts consider to be an optimum progression.

One thing of interest is that the subjects were all young adults and there were only 16 people involved. Something else to be considered is that this small group was split so that some got more of the product than others. The good news is that those who took the full dose are the ones who lost the most. Also, if some got more and some got less, and some lost more and some lost less, the "average" means that those on the full dose lost more than the 17.5 pounds.

For the most part, most of the studies used to back up claims made by most other products follow the same pattern.

Okay, so what's the problem?

No real problem. However, the same results can easily be obtained by most people simply by making a few simple lifestyle changes, such as decreasing sugar consumption and increasing physical activity. Another issue is that losing weight by restricting food intake, or redirecting the body's processes, often can result in loss of lean muscle mass... a result which makes the body a teeny bit less healthy and a bit more prone to gaining weight back.

If you look carefully, most of these products, somewhere on their packaging, or in their website or advertising copy, will have some sort of statement to the effect that the product works best when combined with regular exercise and proper nutrition. The bottom line is that, while these products might HELP you lose weight, you will lose MORE weight and build a healthier body by using them while getting regular exercise and eating more wisely.

At this moment, I am personally aware of dozens of products which all make just about the same claims. Those that DO work seem to work to about the same level. Probably, the next best weight loss product is going to do about the same. Whatever these products do, nothing as yet has been shown to work as well as a healthy lifestyle based on exercise and nutrition.

Maybe, after all, the next best weight loss product is actually the oldest... and the one that has been proven to work for just about anybody.

What Is the Paleo Diet Plan in Simple Terms?

By
The paleo diet plan, which you may have heard referred to as the caveman diet, is basically a dietary plan for modern times based on what we believe cavemen ate in the paleolithic time period during the early half of the stone age.

This present-day diet is composed of food groups that consist mainly of fish and other seafood, grass-fed animal meats, poultry, eggs from cage-free chickens, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds and healthy oils, such as flaxseed, coconut and olive oils. In a nutshell, the diet is based on the foods that could be hunted, fished and collected by cavemen thousands of years ago. Consequently, grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar or oils, potatoes and processed foods are excluded from the diet.

Bountiful in nutrients and free from added chemicals and preservatives, research has shown that these natural food groups contribute to a healthy body. While the intention for many is losing weight on this caveman diet, the objective of living a balanced and energetic lifestyle is what keeps so many people committed. It is interesting that medical professionals recommend the same types of foods for weight control and high blood pressure today that our primitive cavemen thrived on so many years ago.

An example of a day's menu on this diet could consist of a couple of free-range eggs scrambled in olive oil with sautéed onions, peppers and mushrooms for the breakfast meal. A salad loaded with greens, veggies, nuts and sliced fruit for lunch speaks for itself in so far as the paleo diet health benefits. Dinner could be grilled salmon or other fresh fish and as many vegetables as desired seasoned with garlic and olive oil. Berries and fruits are a typical dessert or snack along with raw vegetables or nuts.

Paleo Diet Health Benefits
One of the first noticeable results from being on the paleo diet plan is a loss of excess fat as the body starts to convert stored fat to energy. The omission of processed foods being replaced by all natural foods will automatically cause an upsurge in metabolism rates. People who are on the paleo diet to lose weight generally feel less hungry and do not suffer from sugar cravings. Bottom line, you are eating healthy while burning fat at the same time.

While health benefits of the paleo diet to lose weight are an incentive to undergo this strict diet, the overall health benefits are encouraging. Along with weight loss, these natural foods are recognized for their support in stabilizing blood pressure and cholesterol to healthy levels while increasing energy, a task the body cannot do when overloaded with processed foods and sugar. The distinct health benefits of this unique diet are a stronger immune defense in fighting off illness and disease, thus eliminating many health risks that are so widespread today. For whatever reason you choose for being on a diet that originated thousands of years ago, the natural foods alone will have a significant improvement on your health and vitality.

Is the diet too restrictive? It may seem that way in the very beginning, but after some time most people come to the realization that their body really doesn't need or even want these outlawed foods.

It's typical for anyone to get bored by eating repetitive foods, so it's helpful to diversify your food choices as much as possible. There really is a large selection of foods on the paleo diet to choose from after all that are healthy and nutritious for your body. The diet provides the types of foods that your body needs to burn fat and feel energized which is not often found in most diets.

A paleo diet plan is not always easy to follow and probably the biggest downfall is not being able to come up with original meal ideas and staying consistent in putting together a meal plan. With the paleo diet growing in popularity there are a lot of menu plans and paleo recipe books available to help get your paleo diet journey off to a good start.

Can You Have Sauces, Dressings, And Condiments On The Nutrisystem Diet?

By

I sometimes have people contact me who are concerned that they aren't going to be allowed to have condiments on Nutrisystem. And, they are picturing themselves having to eat bland diet food. They picture themselves having toast without butter or jelly, bagels with out cream cheese, sandwiches without mustard, and salads without any dressing.
The truth is, you are allowed to have well chosen condiments within moderation. Like all of the foods, condiments are broken down into a category. For example, fruits are considered to be "smart carbs." Proteins are considered "power fuels" and condiments and sauces are put in the "extra" category. And here is where choosing carefully can be very important.
If you can find a condiment item that is below 10 calories per serving, then it is unlimited. You can have all you want. But if you choose an item in the "other" category that is above twenty calories per serving, then it's limited to three times per day. Now, to be fair, few people are going to need to have condiments much more than three times per day.
Just thinking about it, you'd probably want butter or jelly for breakfast, and perhaps something for lunch and dinner, but this still equals three times during the day. Admittedly, there are many examples of Nutrisystem meals that lend themselves to these extras. Of course, the breakfast bagel is one.
Also, the hot dog and the hamburger sort of call out for mustard or ketchup. It's not as satisfying to eat a salad without dressing. (The company does provide a grocery list on their website that lists suggestions for brands that offer low calorie, low fat, and low sugar options. I've tried many of them and I'm often surprised at how good they are.) Better yet, many of the suggestions fall into unlimited category.)
The serving sizes on most of the condiments (honey, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, cream cheese, salad dressing, salsa, and syrup as just some examples) are one tablespoon. So hopefully, this might make you feel a little better.
You're not going to have to choke down dried toast or eat a salad without any dressing. And yes, you can have some ketchup for the hot dog or even some bar b que sauce for the sloppy joe or some salsa for the fajita. You can have more than three servings per day if you choose carefully. But even if you don't, you will at least get to have a condiment choice for all three of the main meals.

Fast Flat Belly Diet

The good news is that you can lose your belly fat fast in a healthy and safe way. It's not a secret Diet. It is just about eating healthy foods and avoiding the foods that can generate and store fat in your body.
Stop Eating Anything White
No more white bread, white flour or white sugar. You have to cut these foods right out of your diet if you want to lose fat fast and in a healthy and balanced way. All of these white foods are processed so much in factories that most of the original flavours and nutrition are well and truly gone. The list if white foods to avoid include:
  • Pasta
  • Bread
  • Crackers
  • White potatoes
  • White rice
  • Pasteurized dairy products
Only Drink Water
Water should be your only choice of drink. It cleans the body, hydrates the skin and cells, and helps to remove waste out of your body. If you think that you'll have withdrawals from coffee, have just one cup in the morning. Water needs to be your main drink throughout the day, every single day. You must stop drinking all the sodas, flavoured water drinks, alcohol, and all pasteurized dairy. This is not a tough as it sounds, and remember your goal is to lose that belly fat. Just keep thinking how good you're going to look and feel.
Avoid Wheat.
Wheat has an incredible capacity to keep fat in the body. Wheat, even whole grain wheat, can make you feel bloated and more heavy than you need to be. No wheat means avoiding crackers, bread and cereals.
Look After Your Liver
It's important is to keep your liver clean and healthy. Your liver is the second largest organ in the body (your skin is number one). The reason it's so vital is that virtually everything we eat must pass through the liver. Your liver helps digest foods, make proteins and gets rid of bad foods. So you have to keep it in good working order! To get your liver clean and healthy add lemon to each glass of water you drink.
Eat Fat Burning Foods
There are, believe it or not, fat burning foods and you should be including them into your diet. Some foods take more calories to burn so eating more of them will help you to burn more fat. These include:
  • Peppers - cayenne, jalapeno, and habanero
  • Berries
  • Organic Eggs
  • Saturated Fats - olive and coconut oil
These are just a few fat burning foods, but by adding them into your diet while at the same time getting rid of wheat products, white products, and unneeded drinks, you will see that unwanted fat disappearing in no time.
