3 Tips To Help You Choose The Best Fitness Program

By Sila Rodney

When you make the decision to increase the physical activity in your life, you need to choose a fitness regime that will suit your needs. A healthy lifestyle change will determine the results that you get. Choosing the best bodybuilding program for you will require deciding the activity that will suit your lifestyle and that you will enjoy. This will help to motivate you to keep up with the fitness program so that you can get the desired results.

Medical check up

It is important to get medical checkup before you embark on a fitness program. Consult your doctor so that you can get medical check-up and support before embarking on any physical activity. After you choose a program that you will enjoy such as the popular Body Beast, make sure that your doctor rules out any medical complications that can affect your ability to exercise effectively. Pre-exercise screening is especially important if you are overweight or over 40 years or if you suffer from a medical condition.

Choosing the style

It is a good idea to choose a fitness style that will suit your needs. You are more likely to keep working out when you choose a program that will suit your style needs. Determine whether you prefer an organized or casual approach to working out. You also need to decide whether you prefer an individual or group-based activity. Some people prefer exercising alone while others like the buddy system while others still prefer team activities. Weigh the pros and cons of the programs that you choose.

Your fitness goals

It is important to determine your goals before you start the fitness program. When you have fitness goals you know what you are working towards and you will find it easier to measure the results. It is important to know that different activities or programs will offer different results. Decide if your goal is weight management or if you want to build muscle. Knowing your health and fitness goals will help you to find out the best workout and intensity for your body.

There are tips that will help you to choose the right workout and researching the options available will help you to make the best decision. Talk to fitness experts and read reviews to help you choose the best program. Remember that your age, gender and current fitness condition will determine the results that you get. Some programs are more effective than others are and knowing this will help you to choose the best option. If you want quick results, there are workouts that will help you to achieve your goals.

Fitness Tests to See Where You Stand Health-Wise

There are a few fitness tests which can give us a pretty good idea of where we stand when it comes to overall health. The two tests we will describe here can be done at any time in nearly any place. In fact, when you are finished reading this masterpiece (that's meant to be humorous) you can get up and try them out yourself. It gives you some idea of your core strength, flexibility and stability which according to tests is vital for healthy aging.
1. The sitting-rising test. This test, called the SRT, was put forth by Brazilian researchers just a few years ago. The concept is pretty simple, but the scoring system is a little like Olympic ice skating. It involves the ability to sit on the floor from a standing position and then stand from that sitting position. The goal is to sit and stand without touching the floor without anything but the feet, which can be crossed in the process.
You start the exercise with five points for each part, sitting and standing, and whenever a hand, elbow or any other body part touches the floor you lose a point. You lose one-half point if you lose your balance on the way down or up. To be in top shape you should score no fewer than eight points total or basically one touch to the floor up and down without losing any balance.
This is one test for muscular-skeletal fitness, and this measure of flexibility and muscular strength it is believed is vital to longevity. The Brazilian researchers maintain a direct correlation exists between how high you score on the test and the number of years one can expect to live. That may be a bit of an overreach, but certainly core strength, balance and overall flexibility are important to healthy aging.
2. The plank abdominal exercise. This exercise, also referred to as the hover, is quite easy to describe but harder to maintain for any length of time. In a face-down position, only the toes and the forearms should be touching the floor. The torso should be kept in a straight and rigid position, then just hold that position for as long as you can.
The minimum time you should be able to do is two minutes. This is really a test of core muscle strength versus amount of weight carried around the midsection. Obviously most of the weight that will have to be supported is midsection weight. So if you are having difficulty reaching the two minute mark it may be due to excessive belly fat, which is known to be the most dangerous health wise.
These are just two tests that can be easily self-administered to how you shape up. But they are also a couple of excellent body weight exercises that can be done without going to a health club. The plank, for instance can be tweaked to work out other areas. From the plank position raise one leg off the floor for fifteen seconds, then the other. There is absolutely no excuse for anyone not to do exercises such as these, as they take very little time and absolutely no equipment or money to give yourself a great workout.
Exercises that work various muscle groups are great for everyone, but usually is a favorite beginner strength training. Some can be classified as gaining muscle without using weights such as push ups or squats. Learn more about it on our website. Rich Carroll is a health enthusiast and writer living in Chicago.

10 Fitness Tips for Busy Moms

By Lisa A Sims

It's not just a saying that "... Being a mom is truly the most important and the most difficult job on earth." Moms are almost expected to be super-human: maintaining a home, cooking, homework, bathing and caring for little ones, caring for not-so-little ones (depending on how self-sufficient your husband is) and, very likely, going to work. It's no wonder most of us don't have time to get back our pre-baby bodies. When do you fit a workout (or even a shower for that matter) into that kind of schedule?

But, here's a little secret you might not know: if you manage to fit some exercise into your ultra-demanding schedule, it will get easier... not easy, being a mom is never easy, but it will make it easier to accomplish all the things you have to do in a day. One of the many benefits of getting fit is that it boosts your energy level. So here are 10 tips that might help you to fit working out into your schedule and to stick with it:

Work around your schedule. Don't reschedule your life to fit in a workout, schedule your workout to fit your life. If you can only workout 15 minutes on a given day, then get in that 15 minutes. Doing something is always going to benefit you more than doing nothing.

Do a workout that will give you the most benefits in the least amount of time. The workout that will do this for you is resistance training. Simply put, muscle burns fat - even at rest, a person with more muscle will burn more fat than a person with little muscle. This doesn't mean that you have to look like a body builder. A toned, healthy physique is the key.

Change it up. Workout boredom is one of the main reasons people quit working out. Get some variety in and don't repeat the same workout over and over again. Not only will your muscles adapt to it thus decreasing its effectiveness, but you won't stick to it if the thought of doing it bores you silly.

Make it fun. Blast some motivational tunes, dance and sing out loud between sets (okay, maybe not if you're working out at a gym), post some motivational posters in your workout space. Heck, give yourself some positive feedback. When you finish an especially hard set yell "I ROCK!!"

Workout with a buddy. Even if you can't work out together, having someone going through the process with you who is experiencing the same victories and difficulties is encouraging and will help you stick to it. If you don't have anyone willing to do it with you, join an online fitness group - there are many such groups on Facebook.

Get plenty of sleep. When you're sleepy, your body tends to crave food - trying to get that energy it needs to get through the day. I know as a mom getting a good night's sleep is easier said than done, but if you're looking to lose weight, lack of sleep is one of your biggest enemies.

Find a motivator. It can really be anything; an event you'd like to attend and look stunning for, a person you want to impress, a pair of jeans you want to fit in. Find something that will drive you to reach your goal. If you can't think of anything, think of the positive example you'll be setting for your kids. Strong, healthy mothers are more likely to have strong, healthy kids.

Play with your kids. Don't knock the benefits of a good old game of tag. Getting active with your kids will make it easier for you to fit exercise into your day. It's really killing 2 birds with one stone - you get in a workout, they get playtime with their favorite person - you!

Find a sugar replacement. And no, I don't mean substitutes like aspartame (although there are some good natural replacements out there today such as xylitol), I mean reach for carrots and hummus instead of a cookie. Sugar is not only addictive, but can cause a plethora of health issues. It's not as hard as you would think to significantly reduce your intake and you will feel the benefits (and so will your waistline).

Don't listen to the negative voice in your head. Honestly, that little guy will try his darnedest to sabotage you. He's a liar. You are awesome. You have the hardest, most demanding job in the world and you do it every single day. YOU CAN DO THIS!

Why You Need a Fitness Activity Tracker

By
I've been a track runner for the past six years while living in the United States and later, Canada. After many years of track running and doing a lot of cardio in the gym I learned that there a lot of things and devices that could actually help you become a better athlete and reach the next level of your fitness goals. One might think that an activity tracker is only for track running but to be honest, with this device, it helps you in all areas of life. In this article I will be discussing the benefits of having a fitness tracker at your fingertips.
One of the major benefits of having an activity tracker is that it tracks your entire steps taken, distances walked, complete statistics on calories burned and stairs climbed throughout the day. I remember recommending this device to one of my closest buddy Jonathan when he was still overweight. He came to me because he wanted to lose 60 pounds off his waist line and become a healthier version of himself. I remember working with Jonathan and his fitness tracker and I have to say that the device helped me help him so much better.
When I wasn't with Johnathon I had no way of tracking his progress at all. So I told him to write down what his activity tracker showed his statistics as for a given day and so forth. This helped me understand the right steps Johnathon had to take to lose his excess weight faster. I can easily say now, Johnathon is in amazing shape. He's in such good shape that he participated in a Tuff Mudder challenge with me last summer which was awesome.
Furthermore, another major benefit I found with activity trackers are they actually help you sleep better. You can get a better night's sleep to restore your body. These devices have built in personal alarms that can wake you up every morning without waking up your spouse. I've dealt with many activity trackers that has had this function and one fitness tracker that actually has a silent by effect alarm is the Fitbit One activity tracker. Most of this article is based on this model.
Last but not lease, with certain new devices like the Fitbit One Activity Tracker, you can upload your statistics wireless to your computing device or phone. Personally, this is a big function for me because I'm a very techy guy and like to stay on top of my goals and everything. So, having the convenience of always being able to know where I'm at stats wise is always a good thing. Keeps me focused and on the ball. Last note, with many new fitness trackers, they contain charts and graphs to help you better understand your progress.

How to Set Choose Health and Fitness Equipment

By
There are hundreds of health and fitness equipment you can buy to use at home and sometimes most buyers are not sure what to do so as to get the right ones. You want to avoid spending a considerable sum of money on a fitness machine only to realize shortly thereafter that you did not really need it. Since there are varied types of these pieces of equipment you need to have a proper reason for making a purchase.
Do you truly need it? Whatever gear you buy must really suit your desire and interests. You must always make sure you know the equipment well together with its various uses and benefits. This is because paying for an expensive machine not always a guarantee that you are going to use it. It is always advisable to start with simple equipment that is properly aligned to your fitness goals.
Is it worth the cost? You also need to interrogate the value of what you are trying to buy and see whether it is really worth its cost. If you must buy it, there are always chances that you can get a more affordable option. You don't want to spend so much money on something that will break down tomorrow or you realize you could have bought it more reasonably at the next shop.
Consider second hand: When looking for fitness equipment to use at home, it is sometimes advisable to visit shops that sell used equipment. You are more likely to get a good offer in such a shop as opposed to going for what is completely new. It is sometimes possible for you to get equipment that has only been used for a short time at an extremely low rate. Don't be surprised to buy something that has been used for only three months at half the cost of a new one.
Do you have the space? Sometimes people buying sports gear don't think about the space they have at home and whether it will be sufficient to accommodate what they are buying. Try to think about the space you have at home and whether it will actually fit a treadmill or anything else you are buying.
Is there a cheaper alternative? You need to ask yourself whether there is a gym next to where you live which has this expensive health machine where you could save money by becoming a member and using it so that you use this money for something else. It is always important to think clearly before buying home gym equipment before spending your cash.

Do Your Habits Support Your Fitness and Weight Loss Goals?

By
Do you want to keep your weight at a healthy level? In order to maintain weight loss, whether it is from surgery, calorie restriction, or exercise, a lifestyle that supports weight maintenance should be adopted. It is important that you work to break old, destructive habits and create new, positive ones. Doing so can help you achieve your goals and maintain weight loss long-term. Here are four tips that will help you to adopt new behaviors so that they become long-term habits.

1. Create a written agreement between yourself and someone who is supportive of your goals, such as a spouse or your personal trainer. Be specific about any behaviors, commitments, or attitudes that is expected of you and the other person who is assisting you in creating the agreement. Both should sign the agreement, post it somewhere in clear view, and revise as goals and situations change.

2.Create a behavioral contract which has the goals that you want to achieve and a non-food reward for achieving each goal. Plan to complete goals by a certain date. Develop action-based goals such as "I will visit the gym 2 days per week for 45 minutes" versus "I want to lose weight and tone up." Update the contract periodically as you meet your goals.

3. Create an environment that is conducive to your fitness and weight loss goals. For instance, if junk foods are your weakness then remove them from your house. Another example includes setting an alarm to remind you to go to the gym. Using cues such as these will help you to stay on track.

4. If you need to weigh the pros and cons of changing a habit, then create a decision balance sheet.

This worksheet helps you to consider the benefits and barriers of changing a behavior, as well as develop strategies to either initiate the change or work around the barriers that prevent you from doing so. Take a piece of paper and divide into four sections. Label each section respectively: benefits, barriers/obstacles, strategies to maximize benefits, and strategies to minimize barriers. Use this to help you to develop a fitness and weight loss plan.

So, to achieve success at long-term weight loss, it's important that you change your old habits that are keeping you unhealthy, and adopt new ones that are going to make you healthier and happier. These strategies, when implemented, are effective at helping you to adopt new behaviors. Adopting new habits is a process; however, in the long-run your body will thank you and you'll have the healthy body to show for it!
